~Forgetting the Past~

Letting go the past.

failures, disappointments,quarrels,hurts,misunderstanding,frustrations,letdowns,bad decisions,missed opportunities.

Let go of memories of unpleasant past experience. They weigh you down and prevent you from growing and moving forward and living life to the full

So people, stop worrying about unnecessary things and enjoy life to the full.

~TOLERANCE~

Today, I would like to emphasize about tolerance. Below is a short poem about it.

Tolerance,
It has disappeared from our every thought,
Disintegrated into the vast majority
of hatred and ignorance.
Dissolved in the obsession of revenge
It will not come back
suddenly like a memory
years after the incident
We must search for it ourselves.

Tolerance,
A form of forgiveness
But the forgiveness is gone.
It has either exploded out with anger
or seeped out with all tears cried.

Tolerance,
We must and will learn to forgive,
forget and accept.

The whole point of the poem is to tell how important is tolerance in a person's life which also affect their communication. Therefore, everyone please be tolerant to each other,it is indeed a good way to maintain a good relationship with people.

Be The Change

Matthias the Speaker.

Yesterday, we were at the Garden Malls to join a group of celebrities including Xandria Ooi for the event - Be The Change. The aims to raise awareness and educate the public on the dire state of the environment. We pledged to give our full support to save our Environment. There was a photo exhibition on environmental issues, too.

The highlight of the event was a talk given by an internationally - recognized speaker, Matthias (can just google) :D the founder of Eco-Warriors. He was also awarded the Greenest Person on the Planet in 2008 by a Canadian Organization. Believe me - he does not own a car but he owns lb hectares of forest plantations in Panama.

Talking about Matthias, he spoke in a very clear tone, a suitable pitch and a moderate rate. All of us managed to follow what he was trying to communication with ease - how to preserve the environment for the next generation!

He had good facial and eye communication too, displaying feelings of anger at people chopping down trees. He made good eye contact with the listeners, always looking at their direction. He answered questions directed to him, showing much interest in the topic of environment. He displayed good body movements especially his hand gesture.

To conclude, Matthias is indeed a good speaker and motivator. He has all the qualities of a good communicator!

Thank you.

The Super Heroes

It is a picture of the DC comic heroes, including the well-known superman, batman, flash and another few of them. I used to watch all this cartoons while i was still in primary school. i believe that most of the boys will watch them too. This is because in this kind of cartoons, they show the kids how powerful the heroes are, how advanced are their technology and many other fantastic things.

But when we look deeper, it actually has some sort of hidden meaning throughout the cartoon series. They actually put in many moral values in the cartoons which is not so obvious that kids will realize them. For example, the heroes will always fight against the bad guys and every time the bad guys will definitely lost the battle. This is actually showing the kids we need to prevent ourselves to do those bad things, if not we will be arrested by the police or we will get our punishments. The same example also gives another meaning which is we have to protect the one and the things we love. Like batman, he always risks his life in order to put Gotham city in a safe situation no matter how dangerous is his missions, this is because Gotham city is the place he grew up and there are people who he loves.

On the other hand, the cartoons also shows that it is important to have friends in our life. For example, batman sometimes will be quite running out of idea without the help of his best friend Robin. Superman will be defeated if he met people who attacks him with krypton if his heroes friends are not around to back up him. Back to our life, they actually teaching us that we really need friends to support us no matter we are happy or sad, no matter at work or studies and also when we face problems. Friends are mostly the best person for us to find, to comfort us, to work with us, and also to cheer us up.

There are a lot of hidden meanings in the cartoons, and mostly positives meanings, it is just depends on people who watch it are able to get them or not. So how bout finding them out when you are watching cartoons next time????

Masks of communicating

It has been a tough day today. It’s because of the replacement of the hari raya. As usual I went to college, but today’s car park was empty, so do the college corridor. What I mean is when I first arrived at the morning of the day. Today’s class ends at five o’clock. Next replacement will also end at the same time. Oh my gosh!!! Just now went to Jalan Ipoh for dinner with my brother, after that we went to One Utama just to have the favorite bubble tea of my brother as a dessert. We took almost four hours for just a dinner and also the dessert session. While we were window shopping at 1u, my phone rang. The number was my dad’s hand phone number. So I change my tone to a more respect way and said hello to my dad. And he asked me where my brother and I were, I asked him why he called and asked such question. But he did not answer and he kept asking. So I was forced to tell him I was in one utama. Just after I said then the voice from the other side of the phone changed to another tone which is a softer voice. Just when I felt curious then the voice said that it was my cousin. At that moment, I changed my tone again from respect to a more relaxing tone.

Actually why I’m telling this, it is because I want to say that we actually wearing different masks when we facing different people. Like my example, I talk to my father with a more respect way but when I talk to my cousin I will use a lighter tone. This happens also when we talk to our teachers, relatives, friends and also to our enemies. It is very common. Before I came to HELP, I never know that teachers actually can be so close to students. Along the HELP corridor, there are lecturers sitting down chatting with the students, there are also lecturers kidding with students while having class. This proves that lecturers are not just having the serious side, they can also be friendly after class. Like me, I will be more talkative when I’m with my friends rather than being with my family members. When I’m facing people who I don’t really like them, I won’t disconfirmed them, but I will immediately putting on another mask to avoid them realizing my true feelings towards them. It is actually good for me when wearing mask to face people, this can avoid a lot of problems happening.

~The Ugly Truth~

IT IS NOT ALWAYS EASY
To apologise
To start all over again
To admit a mistake
To ask for advice
To be unselfish
To keep trying
To think first and act afterwards
To forgive and and forget
To accept criticism
To put yourself in other persons' shoes
BUT IT ALWAYS PAYS...

HARI RAYA AIDIFITRI

Well, Hari Raya Aidifitri as all of us know is the biggest event in the Muslim calendar year. It marks the end of Ramadan which is the fasting month the Muslims.

Malaysia is a cosmopolitan country; a peaceful country in which the three main races, Malays, Chinese, Indians live in harmony. In East Malaysia. we can find other races like Ibans, Kadazans and Dayaks.

My neighbours on my left are Muslims. Home no.44 was one rented to a Muslim family from Kazakthan. My 72-year old granny who origintated from GuangZhou, China once tried to communicate with them in her "broken" Malay. But it was in vain, they didn't understand her and didn't communicate with her.

Thinking that they were proud and indifferent, we were not in speaking terms with them for quite a while until one day, my mom spoke to them in English and to our surprise, they understand us and we became good neighbours. Then they moved away. The present neighbour, a Malay lady greeted us on the first day of Hari Raya with a wide smile, She passed us some cookies and cordial drinks over the fence. We could feel her warmth and we started communicating in Malay, for the first time. She was happy to see my sister Joanne dressed in Baju Kurung,

Later the morning, we visited the residence of our Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd Najib and Datin Sri Rosmah at PutraJaya. We wanted to be a part of the nig celebration. Although the queue was long, very long. We didn't complain much. We could see all the different races lining up to "salam" with the PM,, reflecting the Muhibbah spirit and here, we can see the goals of One Malaysia. Truly manifested! Lastly, to all my Muslin friends, SELAMAT HARI RAYA! :)

The Importance of Communicating

I was quite shocked when I attended last human communication class. We were having a group work which asked to do by our lecturer Mr. Murali. Milan went out to buy drinks for Mr. Murali so there left Sathia, Julien and me discussing about the work sheet. I cant recall what we were talking, but the conversation is something like this, Julien said she cant believe that Sathia can speak appropriate Mandarin. Then I said that Sathia already told everyone in the class she knows how to speak Mandarin, and that prove she is not telling lies. But Julien still resist believing what she said. To giving points to support her own statement, Sathia said that she studied mandarin since she was in kindergarten and she told out the primary school she went to. At that moment I stunned, I can’t believe that she was in the same school with me. Ok, the first story ends. After Milan was back, Julien and Sathia kept communicate using mandarin. When they said that Milan doesn’t know how to listen to Mandarin, Milan said that he went for Mandarin classes before but a long time did not practice and now not really understands again. And what I think at that moment was, wow, Milan went to Mandarin classes before, cool!

The point of telling these stories actually is I want to say that human actually needs a lot of communications. Because communications can bring us a lot of information no matter it is useful or not. It is proven that communication may also bring us information that surprises us, such as the story of I stated above. If we did not sit down and talk to each other, we won’t know that Sathia really know how to speak mandarin well. I won’t know that she was actually studying in the same school with me while we were in primary. And we won’t even know that Milan went to Chinese classes before.

This is why communication stands an important role on our daily life.

a confident smile

Since kindergarten until now, I don’t really have much confidence about myself. I feel shy talking to others. I always feel that I can’t do things well. I feel nervous when someone asks me to do something important. Maybe because I cant accept myself from facing failure, I doesn’t hope to disappoint people who put on their hope on me. There are many factors that hold me on my back from proceeding myself to the next level. But when I look over myself all again, is it those really what makes me feel not confidence? Or maybe of the culture I have been through all these years.

I’m the second son of my family, which is also the youngest. Since I was a kid until now, many important decisions and choices of my life are done by indirectly my family. I was pampered since I was small. Relatives who are like my age had gone through things like searching for a part time job. I’m the only teen who didn’t work before. My family culture which is the youngest kid get most pampered life made my life become more safety I guess. But in another way, I can’t get independence. This caused me always run away and avoiding when I faced problems. I hate being like this. Until now, even what movie I want to watch when my brother and I reached cinema also I let my brother to make the decisions, when go out for dinner also I let my family members to order for me. Maybe that’s another way of mine showing my love to my family, being a very good and obedient children in my family. That’s my perception towards myself.XD

In the future, I will try a lot harder to find out who myself really are. I want to understand myself. I want to become a people who can really make my own decisions. i want to gain back my confidence which I lost all this years. ^^

Try Speaking Mandarin in China

I'm a Chinese and I can speak Mandarin pretty well but communicating with a Chinese from the mainland China is totally a different experience. I'd this experience during my 10-day stay in Beijing last August.

I stayed in Trader's Hotel and each morning I was greeted by the friendly Beijingers. The hotel staff "NI HAO MA?" in english, how are you? Which made me very happy before I started my tour for the day whether to Forbidden City or to climb the Great Wall of China.

But when you're OUT from the hotel, in the streets of Beijing or small alleys or "hutongs", you'll see a different scenario Beijing, a mega city is a good place to shop, as the goods are so, so damn cheap!

Bbbuutt... you need to BARGAIN in order to slash the price down. The mandarin that we Malaysian Chinese speak is quite different. Why? cause we don't speak Mandarin with the same intonation or pronunciation. To sum up, we don't speak with the Beijing accents, the "shh..sh.shh." You get me, don't you? :)

The traders know we're not local and thus we've a tough time haggling over the price of a hand-bag or a blouse. But I'm still better than my poor auntie who can't speak a single word of Mandarin. We both bought some similar oriental paintings/drawings but I paid ONLY a fraction of what she paid. *laugh my *** off!* :P so when you're in Beijing, try speaking Mandarin and if possible speak with the correct accent then you'll be truly rewarded.

See how important communication is.

A subliminal message is a secret message embedded in another medium, designed to pass below the normal limits of the human minds perception. These messages are unrecognizable by the conscious mind, but in certain situations can affect the subconscious mind and can negatively or positively influence subsequent thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs. This is why subliminal messages in a way is a form of communication but in a discrete way, which somehow can affect our minds subconsciously.Subliminal message is a message usually hidden in audio or picture. It is not detectable easily but these messages basically influences our sub conscious mind. Most of these subliminal pictures has hidden sexual elements in it in order to implement it to those who views them. Some researches says that the effect of subliminal messages is rather insignificant and ineffective while others believe that they might cause some harm or confusion.Subliminal messages are commonly used in pictures. Subliminal messages hidden in pictures are part normally used as part of advertising campaigns with sellers believing that subliminal messages hidden in pictures with increase their product sell.

When a person is shown a subliminal message behind a picture, most people won’t notice it but somehow it affects our subconscious mind in a way where we wont realize it. Some also believes that subliminal messages in pictures can also have a positive effect. Most subliminal messages were often used in advertisements . For example, Wilson Bryan Key ( professor at the University of Western Ontario) found that in the Johnny Walker Scotch ads the ice cubes had images of screaming faces, skulls, and other horrific images. Other products in which subliminal messages have been used are beer products like Labatt's, tobacco products, alcohol products, food products, pharmaceutical products and sports equipment and even in drinks such as coke.

Do subliminal messages in pictures and advertisements exist? There has been no proof as yet that subliminal messages in pictures influences ones action compared to others. Many individuals have found that beneficial subliminal messages hidden in videos and movies have helped them to quit smoking, lose weight and conquer other bad habits. Hopefully, more scientific studies will be done and we can have a conclusive answer. Thus, subliminal messages in pictures do affect the mind unconsciously and it will influence our minds, beliefs and thoughts.

The need to Communicate.

Communication in the Oxford Dictionary is defined as the activity or process of expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people information. It is important that humans need to communicate with one another as "no man is an island".

Right from Day One, a mother will try all means to communicate with her new-born baby and you can see the mother beaming with joy if the infant can just respond with one simple syllable word - MA.

People who are deaf and dumb still communicate with one another by using the sign language which is non-verbal.

A person with good communication skills tend to be more popular than someone who's quiet, passive and introvert. Hence, if you can communicate well you tend to be more expressive. Here Interpersonal Communication come into the picture, in order to have a relationship with any person, you need interaction. As we do so, we learn and reveal about others and self. This is made possible only with a two-way communication between the speaker and listener and vice versa.

A relationship suffer from "communication break-down" if there's only participation from one party who's willing to communicate and the other party who choose to remain silent.

We can conclude that communication is vital and essential in our everyday life. Thank you :)

Message Overload

Message overload, according to what our lecturer Mr. Murali said was too much of information given by the speaker in one time and causes the receiver couldn’t fully receive the messages the speaker trying to sent. This happens a lot in our life, am I right? After having that lecture I kept thinking about the “message overload”. Actually how we can really know is that a message overload or just the receiver is not concentrate enough.

There is an example which I would like to state out which happens in my daily life. It would be in the classroom. Everyday, as a student, I have to attend several classes, listening lecturers talking and talking. Sometimes I do feel that keep on receiving information from the lecturer really burdens. Although lecturer will keep asking do the students understand, but students have to keep listening and on the other hand keep writing down the important details. It is actually no time for me to interpret all the information that received at that moment. For me it consider as a message overload. But of course I will admit that there are sometimes I will lack of concentration and start day dreaming.

There were once when I was in secondary school. I can still remember that that day I was asked to tell my class some important messages by my teacher, asking them to do some stuff on the other day. Because of I was in a rush, I spoke quite quick but with a lot of information and also all the words are hardly to be listen, which was told by my friends on the next day. I would consider that as a message overload also.

Thus, I think it is important to learn how to communicate , giving the messages in a correct way, in order to prevent the message overload to happen again.

this is an example of the person who can send a lot of message in a short period but not in the way of message overload.>>>>>

The Tales of Secrets and Cigarettes.

My dad once asked me if I have 'cigarettes' and I understood as do I have any secrets. My obvious answer was yes i do keep secrets. Bam!!! Till date, I'll never forget that slap which was planted on my rosy cheeks. Ambiguity or ambiguous message ; words with different meanings. Ever said ' I miss you' to a friend and got the message wrongly interpreted or sent an emoticon which was understood wrongly. I'm sure many of you have experienced this. There are three main ambiguity known :
  1. Referential Ambiguity = When it is unclear what a referring expression is referring to. For example, Alice hit Jess and she bled. Who bled? Alice or Jess! This is referential ambiguity.
  2. Syntactic Abiguity = When the grammatical structure of the sentence has different meanings. For example : We shall be discussing violence on school. This could be interpreted as discussing the topic violence at a school or discussing violence that happens at school.
Therefore it is important that ambiguity is avoided. One possible way is to ensure that your message is received fully and accurately. One fine day , after a late night out imagine telling your dad that you drank. After receiving that smack, do tell him that all you rank was coke. I suppose this is message overload for you guys so till the next time adios , sayonara and goodbye.

Different Languages that Communicate

Although I had a hectic weekdays,I did enjoyed my weekend by watching television. I watched a Tamil movie named "Abiyum Naanum".This movie revolves around a father's love towards his one and only daughter. He would do anything for his daughter in order to make her happy. The father indeed a very over protective father.

Eventually, after the daughter studied and graduated, it is the time for her to get married. She fell in love with a guy when she studied in New Delhi. The guy that she fell in love was a Punjabi. She has decided to marry him and told about this to her father. But,as all father, her father also disagree with this marriage. Although, he did not agree at first, he did agree finally.

The thing that I would like to tell about is how the daughter's family especially the father communicate with the future in law's family which are Punjabis. The father initially hated them, because he thinks that the Punjab people will separate him from his daughter, but he soon realised that they are good person.

The way that the father's daughter communicate with the Punjab people is very hilarious. The father do not understand the punjabi language. So, it is very hard for him to adapt and communicate with them.

Lastly, I would like to say that two different type of languages can indeed unite these two families to communicate well. This movie shows how languages can communicate people.

Optimism!

How can Optimism be learned? There are many ways where human being can learn this positive psychology to improve their development in life and growth. Optimism goes against depression. When the feeling of positive -ness is there, we could learn to be more relaxed and not feel as if we are under a lot of pressure. Optimism could also prevent any disease which is connected to depression. It will improve one’s health condition after practicing this value in them. Through this value, we can bring out our own talent which is hidden and the achievement will make us proud one day. Getting enough of motivation is another way to learn optimism. Some encouragements to someone could create optimism among them.

Mothers who are closest to a child could contribute this positive psychology. Mother’s explanatory style gives either optimistic or pessimistic effect. Example, if a mother is not happy about the dress code her daughter is wearing. She could nicely inform her that she looks good but if she wears the other dress she will look great. This way she won’t feel too fat or too thin and her confidence will still be with her.

Another way to learn optimism is from adult criticism. Adult in a sense that parents and teachers behavior towards children. Example, teachers in conversation with the female students: You are not good in math or maybe you do not have confidence at all. Same goes to the male students, you did not get good results because you were not paying attention and so on. All this sounds more like discouragement, it should be more encouragement in their word like, you should practice more to achieve good marks in your math or even when you were not listening you got this marks, if you start paying attention properly than maybe you could get better grades.

Computer-Mediated Communication

Today I would like to write according to the title Computer-Mediated Communication. Computer-Mediated Communication which also known as the (CMC) is one of the way of people use for communication nowadays. They are use with the help of technology gadgets such as hand phones and computers. The examples of the CMC are MSN, facebook, Friendster, Email, 3G and so on. These programs are frequently use by human being to communicate almost everyday. The more advanced the gadgets are, the more frequent people use them to communicate.

Why do people prefer using CMC instead of using the old way for communication which is the face to face communication? There are actually some reasons. The reasons included it is easy to use, it is cheap, it is more convenient, it is more faster, you can speak to anyone at anytime and anywhere you want. I’m one of the examples who is using Computer-Mediated Communication everyday. The very good example would be my hand phone. Everyday I will use my hand phone to text messages to my friends asking them out when have break time, telling my family what time I will finish my class and so on. Other than that, I will also log in to my facebook and also MSN messenger in order to keep in touch with my old friends and also making new friends. For me, as a student with no income, the largest reason will be the cost, using all this CMC will be much cheaper. The second reason will mostly because when there is something which is hard to be tell face to face or its quite embarrassing when telling to others face to face, the CMC will be the best solution for this problem.

But there are also the disadvantages about using CMC .I had faced problems when using CMC too although it is very convenient to use. Example of the disadvantage will be the emotion problem. Just like a few days ago, I accidentally said something not good to my friend while we were texting each other using short messages service. My friend replied me with the word ‘grr…’. At that moment I can’t even know was she really angry or she was just playing with me. This is because I couldn’t look at her face expressions. I couldn’t interpret that was she really angry or just joking with me. This reminds me that when using CMC, we need to use words and sentences very carefully and beware of what we are talking. Because of cant interpreting others emotions and expressions, the meaning of our original information would be misunderstand by the people who we are trying to send out the information to, which we call the ambiguous in the principles of communication.

Lastly, I want to say that we must really beware when using the CMC. It is convenient but also could lead us to some misunderstanding.
